Day 33 & 34, Bungle Bungles (Wednesday 29th July - Thursday 30th July)

Bungle Bungles NP

To see the Bungle Bungles we decided to stay at the Bungle Bungle caravan park which is just off the sealed road and drive into the park for a day trip, the drive to the caravan park was an easy 100 kilometers and we arrived there pretty early in the day.

We had an un-powered site which was a bit grassy and flat so that was good, the amenities were pretty close too so it was a pretty good site position wise.

Visiting the Park

The drive out to the park was only 50 kilometers but to say it was rough would be an understatement, we had been warned that the corrugations were huge and so they were, the problem was that you could not get up to a reasonable speed because the road was also very windy, the couple of creek crossings along the way were easy.
The trip into the Park took around an hour and the road in takes you to the information center which is very good, there you can pay your fees, get a drink and get some advice from the ranger there regarding things to see in the park.

At the information center the first choice you have to make is which end of the park you want to visit first, from that point its 30 or so kilometers in either direction to the main sights, we decided to go to Cathedral Gorge first and see how much time we had.

Once in the park the roads are in pretty good condition and you can get around pretty quick if you wanted, the drive to the cathedral Gorge was pretty easy, at the car park there is plenty of space to park, and from there the walk to the gorge was easy and pretty short, there are also a couple of other walks from that point, some short and some very long we did one of the shorter ones before doing the walk to the Gorge itself.

Exploring the Bungle Bungles
The Gorge was very nice but not very much water at all, the water that was there was stagnant and not very inviting at all, but regardless it was still worth the walk in, we were also treated to a rendition of Waltzing Matilda by and old bloke, the song seemed to take a long time to finish but we stayed till the end.

On the way out from Cathedral Gorge we stopped at a lookout, I think it was Zebra Lookout, where you get a pretty good view of the country side and the Bungles.
Cathedral Gorge

The drive out was slightly faster knowing what the road was like, and not getting stuck behind anyone.

Our visit to the Bungle Bungles was nice, in retrospect it may have been better to stay at the national park which wold have meant seeing a bit more of the park but on the downside it would have meant towing the camper in on that awful road.

The Bungle Bungles

The Bungle Bungle caravan park was just OK, the sites were not bad but it was pretty pricey at $54.00 (2A+2K) for a non powered site with relocatable amenities that were limited in numbers and pretty crappy.
There are no rubbish bins, no drinking water, and the staff there (mainly backpackers) didn't really give a crap unless you were waving a wad of cash around for a helicopter flight.

Anyway we still had a good time and a glad we visited the Bungle bungles.
