Lake Argyle
We had not intended to stay at Lake Argyle, instead we were going to visit there from Kununurra, but seeing as we were ahead of time we decided to spend a few days on the Lake before going to Kununurra.
On our arrival at the caravan park we were shocked to see the number of people there it was very busy indeed, we had not booked so we were a little concerned about getting a spot.
The booking in system worked with military precision, the very friendly man there found a spot for us and we followed him around to the spot, it wasn't really suitable for the camper but no problem he took us to another which was packed but pretty much perfect, we had grass and some nice shade.
I guess you have to have a pretty good system in place with the volume of people coming in and out of the park, don't be frightened by the busy nature of the park, even though it was full and busy we didn't feel cramped at all.
We were also pretty close to the amenities which were very good.
Ten years ago this caravan park was voted the worst in Australia having been built on the leftovers of a workers camp, these days it holds the title of "Best Caravan Park" and "Best Pool"in Australia.
Although it is a fantastic park, I'm not sure if its the best park in Australia, that's a pretty big call, but the pool on the other hand would have to be be close, it is just fantastic.
The pool is an Infinity pool which cascades over the edge towards an amazing view of the lake, while we were there the water was a little on cool side but it was warm weather and by the afternoon it was a popular spot.
Attached Reception there was a very nice restaurant with indoor and outdoor dining, there was a huge flat screen TV where the footy was on a fair bit.
We didn't eat at the restaurant except for pancakes one morning which I have to say were not that great, but they were pretty cheap and OK, and saved making breakfast.
At reception there was a separate desk for booking various tours in the area, the one we were interested in was the "Full Moon Boat Trip" which is obviously only available on the full moon which we happened to have at the moment.
As it turned out the Full Moon Tour was available and pretty good value at $212.00 dollars for the family.
We were picked up in a small bus at the caravan park at 1800 hrs and driven around to the launching ramp where our boat awaited, the skipper was a young bloke and very nice, he welcomed us on board and going through a brief safety talk before heading off.
We headed to a spot where you get a great view of the moon rising over the ranges and the lake, it was a spectacular view and once up the moon lit up the lake.
I did take some photos but they don't do it justice so you will have to use your imagination until you come out here yourselves.
From there we headed in towards the shore where we cruised along spotting the fresh water Crocs with torches, there were lots of them along the shoreline, according to the skipper a resident population of 30,000, that's a lot of Crocs.
Now that we had seen how many crocs there are in the lake came the next part of the tour, swimming in the lake.
We were taken to a part of the lake where the water is 30 mt deep and led lit noodles were handed out to those who want to swim, our son Samuel was first to grab one and dive straight in, Nicholas, Joanne and some others soon after.
I followed a bit after that, it was really quite nice in, a bit scary peering down into the black water below though.
While we swam we had complimentary beer and wines and nibbles, which was great.
After the swim we headed back toward shore where we spotted a few rock wallabies and our skipper scrambled off the boat onto the rocky shore to try and catch a snake, he didn't find one which most people on board were pretty happy about.
While at Lake argyle we also visited the dam which was pretty impressive and only a short drive from the park, and a historical home which was the home of the original settlers in the area.
We all really enjoyed our stay at Lake Argyle and the tour we did there, and would recommend it to anyone visiting the area.
The caravan park was great as were the staff there.
