Day 71 - 73, Port Headland ( Wed 05th Set - St 07th Sept )

Port Headland

The drive to Portland from Port Smith was fairy long but sealed all the way so easy enough, plus we were glad to get out of there and away from the plague of Sand Flies.

Typical Big 4 Site, a bit cramped.
Port Headland is the second largest town in the Pilbara of WA, its also the site of the highest tonnage export port in Australia.
Up the road a little there is the satellite town of South Headland , its less industrial and it seems most of the FIFO workers live there.

We stayed at the Big 4 in Portland which was pretty good, like many other supposed Big 4 parks it did not really have the facilities you expect from a big 4 but it was OK and not expensive.

The Seafarers Tour

Having a drink at the Seafarers Mission.
We didn't really do a great deal at Port Headland, mainly relaxed ,did some shopping and did one tour, The Seafarers Tour, which was great.
The tour is run by the Seafarers Mission located near the port, it is mainly run by volunteers who have for many years tried to make the lives of Seafarers coming ashore a little more comfortable, caring for the pastoral, practical and spiritual needs of the Seafarers.
The Seafarers Center is an interesting place, its one of the most multi functional places I have seen, its a shop, a pub, recreational centre, an internet cafe, a church, and other things all rolled into one.

Iron Ore Ship in the Port
Loading up the Iron Ore

The tour we took started at the centre watching a short video about the mission, we then hoped on a bus down to the dock where we boarded a boat, on that boat we cruised all around the port getting close enough to the massive ships that you could touch them.
As we sailed around we dropped off and picked up seafarers, the tour guide told us about the ships in the port and also about the port itself, it was very interesting and a lot of fun.

Samuel, our youngest son got to drive the boat we were in which he thought was amazing, it wasn't a small boat either, the passengers didn't even notice that we were zig zagging instead of going straight LOL.

Skipper for a few minutes, very excited.

Port Headland was a nice stop over, a good place to recover from our Sand Fly bites and figure out where we go next, we enjoyed our stay there.
