Day 94 - 95, Steep Point, Tamala Station ( Fri 28th Sept - Mon 29th Sept )

Steep Point & Tamala Station

We have traveled a long way to get to this point in our adventure, Steep Point is the Western most point of the Australian mainland, we had intended to camp right at Steep point but decided getting out there with the trailer would be to much of a hassle.
Instead we camped at Tamala Station and did a day trip to the point.

Tamala Station "Three Bays" Camp

Three Bays Campsite
Tamala Station is located on the Useless Loop road 43 kilometers from Shark bay road, its a pretty good gravel road to the homestead where you have to check in before going to one of the various camp sites, the lovely lady there put us into the "Tree Bays" camp site because it was the closest to Steep point, as it turns out we we reckon it was also the best.

Beach Frontage Accommodation, Priceless!
After we checked in we drove the 20 kilometers to our camp site, when we got there we were not sure what to do really, we turned off the track right onto the beach, there before us was beautiful bay, not a person to be seen, for a little while we discussed the fact that maybe we were in the wrong place, we were expecting to see at least a few other people.

Once we came to the realization that we had this amazing place to ourselves we turned onto the beach and drove a very short distance to a spot that seemed to have a little protection with the sand dunes behind us.

Beach Fishing For Long Tom

I have to say this spot is probably the best camp sites we have ever had, it ticked all the boxes, private, safe swimming and good fishing, amazing sunset and moon rise, and cheap, you do have to be fully self contained though, there are No amenities.

Steep Point

Steep Point Track
We headed off to Steep point for a day trip along the Useless loop road, it was quite a drive, the road started off pretty good but became extremely corrugated in places, slowing us down to 15 kph a lot of the time, we followed a car with a boat in tow and it looked like the boat was going to fly off at any minute, luckily for them it didn't.
After a while the road started to get sandy as you cross numerous sand dunes, at a one point you reach a spot where there is a sign advising to let tyres down to a max pressure of 20, this is a must, believe me.
Dmax at the Western Most Point Of The Australian Mainland
The road from that point crosses many sand dunes over some very soft sand, we made it without problem but i am glad we had no trailer to drag along, there were some people having to have a couple of attempts at some of the taller dunes.

Arriving at the Rangers station you have to Check in and either pay a National Parks day fee or camping fees if you are staying there, from that point its a 20 min drive to the sign.
Steep Point Cliffs

Steep Point
At the sign you are standing at the Western most point of the Australian mainland, there is even a special post there with a camera mount so you can all get in the photo.

The cliffs at Steep point are very popular for land based fishing, its a dangerous but very productive spot apparently, fishermen  will tell you that Steep Point is arguably the best land based fishing spot in the world.

Last year we went to the Cape and visited the Northern most point of the Australian mainland, now we have seen the Western mos point, only two to go, which we may do one of on the way home.

Our stay at "Three Bays" Tamala Station was fantastic, secluded beach front camping at its best, would highly recommend this spot.
