Day 51 - 53, Derby (16th Aug–18th Aug)

Derby

There are two caravan parks in Derby, the first one we stopped at had a full house sign up but we stopped and asked in case they had a cancellation, the woman i spoke to told me that they had in fact just got a cancellation, you beauty !
Unfortunately when we told her we had kids we were told that kids were not allowed in the caravan park, it was an adults only park !.

The other park, the Kimberley Entrance which was much bigger had a vacancy and we got a nice grass powered site close to amenities and on grass, only thing this park lacked was a swimming pool but there was a public pool in town not far away.

The Jetty

High Tide at Derby Jetty
We had walk along the Derby Jetty which was interesting to see at both High and Low tides, the tides can be up to 11 meters here, we also fished here twice without I might add.
We did see a lady catch a small shark and there were some people catching Mud Crabs in pots though.

At the start of the jetty there is a restaurant and take away currie/fish and chip shop, we didn't eat there but the meals looked pretty good and it was very popular.

Low tide at Derby Jetty

The Prison Tree

The Prison Tree

There seems to be a lot of prison trees in the Kimberly, this one is few kilometers out of Derby.

The Spinnaker Hotel

The Spinnaker Hotel is a very nice place for a drink / meal, its new, only three or so years old, we had a couple of drinks and a feed there and enjoyed the air conditioning and flat screen TV while we ate.

The Mowanjum Centre

Just out of town you will find the Mowanjum Art and Cultural Centre, there you will find some great aboriginal art, there is a short movie about aboriginal art and culture to watch, it was very good and well worth spending a few minutes to watch it.
The art for sale there ranges in price from very low to very high, we bought a painting (in the very low range) of the "Wandjina", the supreme spirit.

We quite enjoyed our few days at Derby, its a pretty good place to rest and restock after the Gibb river road, there are also some interesting things to do in the area if you stay a while.
